Garage door springs are under enormous tension every time the door moves. They counterbalance a door that can weigh 150 pounds or more, which means they take the brunt of the wear. When a spring starts to fail, your door will usually warn you first. Catching those warning signs early can save you from a door that crashes down or refuses to open at the worst possible moment.

1. The Door Won't Open — or Only Opens a Few Inches

This is the most obvious sign. If your opener strains, hums, or lifts the door a few inches before stopping, a broken spring is almost always the cause. The opener motor is not designed to lift the full weight of the door on its own — the springs do that work. Without them, the motor simply can't do the job.

2. You Heard a Loud Bang from the Garage

A torsion spring failing releases a tremendous amount of stored energy all at once. Homeowners often describe it as a gunshot or a firecracker going off in the garage. If you heard a sharp bang and the door stopped working shortly after, you almost certainly have a snapped spring.

3. There's a Visible Gap in the Spring

Look at the torsion spring mounted on the wall above the door. A healthy spring is tightly wound with coils touching. A broken one will have an obvious two- to three-inch gap where it separated. This is the clearest visual confirmation — but do not touch or attempt to adjust it.

4. The Door Falls Quickly or Feels Heavy

If you disconnect the opener and the door slams down instead of staying put or lowering gently, the springs have lost their tension. A properly balanced door should hold its position when raised halfway. A door that drops is unsafe and needs immediate attention.

5. The Door Opens Crooked or Uneven

On systems with two springs or two lift cables, a single failure can cause one side to lift faster than the other. The door may look lopsided, bind in the tracks, or jerk as it moves. Running a door in this condition can damage the rollers, cables, and tracks.

6. Loud Squeaking, Grinding, or Popping

Worn or stretched springs often make noise before they break. Squealing, grinding, or popping sounds during operation signal that the spring is fatigued and friction is building. This is your early-warning window — the best time to schedule a repair is before the spring snaps entirely.

7. The Springs Are More Than 7 Years Old

Most standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles — about seven years for an average household that opens the door three to five times a day. If your door gets heavy use or your springs are pushing a decade, they are living on borrowed time even if they seem fine today.

Never DIY a Spring Replacement

Torsion springs hold hundreds of pounds of force. A spring that slips during an amateur repair can cause severe injury. This is one job that should always be left to trained technicians with the right tools and replacement parts. The cost of professional service is small compared to a trip to the emergency room.
